Wine Dark Sea
"Wine Dark Sea" by Martin Cole

Wine Dark Sea is a compelling document of photographer and writer Martin Cole’s fascination with Sicily. The often bleak and unremitting Sicilian landscape is at the core of this book, conjuring a brutal beauty in a powerful series of colour photographs accompanied by texts written by Cole and his travelling companion and brother Adrian. Personal experiences are projected as a potential site for historical and cultural commentary while The Mafia, still continuing their hold in daily Sicilian life, act as the thread that ties each experience and observation together.

Norman Lewis, the acclaimed travel writer, says of the book: "Sicily is the legatee of an ancient and impressive civilisation, and simultaneously the victim of its own dark past. This volume reveals much of both, allowing us an intimate encounter with the place without sacrificing its grand sweep of history or its vociferous public dramas. For anyone with even a glancing acquaintanceship with the island, these pages offer powerfully resonant images, and a complex representation of Sicily’s unique and peculiar realities."

Martin Cole lives and works in Brighton. Recent exhibitions include New Contemporaries 96 at the Tate, Liverpool and Camden Arts Centre, London; Evident: New Landscape Photography at The Photographers’ Gallery, 1997 and Public Relations: New British Photography at the Stadthaus, Ulm, Germany, 1997.

Adrian Cole received his Master’s Degree in Middle Eastern Area Studies from Harvard University and a Bachelor’s degree in Arabic from Exeter University. A long-time resident of the United States, he has worked for several think tanks in Washington D.C. and at Harvard University, specialising in the Middle East. He currently runs Harvard’s US- Middle East Connections Program, a post-September 11 initiative.
