Millennium Images is pleased to announce the arrival of the pictures from Pet Reptiles, a photographic project by Sonja Klug.
"I got into reptiles when I was nine. My dad took me to a reptile shop, and from the age of ten I've had some lizards and I have kept all sorts of things ever since. It is an addiction like any hobby. My family has always thought that I was a bit strange anyway." Paul Rose from Rainham, Essex.
Dead mice in the freezer, and a boa stuck behind the radiator is nothing out of the ordinary for the many reptile enthusiasts in the UK.Reptile keeping is becoming an increasingly popular hobby, but it also has its downside. Many reptiles need specialist care, which can be very time consuming and expensive.
Between September 1999 and September 2000 the RSPCA handled 3761 cases involving exotic animals, usually involving neglect or cruelty. They are now campaigning for tighter controls of sale and ownership of dangerous wild animals as well as better welfare.
Sonja Klug used to be a regular contributor to Pet Reptile magazine for over a year. She is now working as an editor for magazines. Her photographic work documents the life of these people breeding reptiles as pets, trying to find out who they are and why they love these creatures so much.
