La Belle de Mai |
|
"Marc Torres doesn't like to intellectualize or conceptualize his images, he prefers to let himself be guided by his intuition. Marc visualises dreams or nightmares, he is an artist who uses the raw material of life. This series of images, which were realized as if it were a performance, are set in the location of the old quarter of "La Belle de Mai" in Marseilles. Marc has captured a climate of "whodunit" where one can imagine a story without constraint or restriction."
by Michèle Courbou
Marc Torres was born in June 1950, he lives and work in Marseilles, France. For a few years he travelled and explored the South of the Iberian peninsula where he was first inspired to use photography. "It was initially Andalusia which caused me to produce a project of work: (Al Andalusia, ground of the poets). Over a period of six years, he traversed this area. During his many visits to the white villages of the Mediterranean, he brought back countless images, which culminated in the project "A Window In The South" (Which would later be exhibited at Venezuela – mois de la photographie à Caracas, Mars 2005.)
At the end of 1990, Marc Torres broke with the tradition of using black and white photography to devote himself entirely to colour photography. His meeting with the artist Marcus Reichert would inspire his vision to focus, on the traces of the everyday and the mudane. Between writing and memory, Marc Torres this "urban reporter" revises our perception of ordinary and the everyday life with a gaze of the artist.
