Brownie Circus by Amat Guillaume |
|
"A circus is most commonly a traveling company of performers that may include acrobats, clowns, trained animals, trapeze acts, hula hoopers and other fun acts and the word also describes the performance that they give. A circus is held in an oval or circular arena with tiered seating around its edge; in the case of traveling circuses this location is most often a large tent."
In the words of Guillaume Amat "Brownie Circus" takes its name from an old box Brownie camera which was used to capture this series of photographs. The actual location where these pictures were taken is Cirque d'Hiver Bouglione in Paris, France. While the concept of this work is to consider that, instead of being a place of appearance, the "Brownie Circus" is the moment and space where jugglers, dancers, clowns and trainers disappear whether in a puff of smoke, by the dazzling spotlight or vanish backstage. These performers become static ghosts or moving shadows in an electrifying ambiance. And beyond the circus ring, behind the scenes, the backstage reveals another kind of performance. Where horses become unicorns, elephant lightness seems to compete with the vulture sturdiness.
Guillaume Amat is dedicated to long-term projects which produce photographic narratives. His field of action is not limited to a single area, never ceasing to question photographic representation and the way to transfigure reality. Aiming to adapt the camera to the subject and the way in which to narrate a story by using different types of cameras, formats and sensible surfaces.
Guillaume Amat is a French photographer who is based in Paris. In 2005, he graduated from MJM Art School, with top honors. After that he worked as a picture researcher and archivist for Magnum Photos (Paris). Guillaume's work "Rizdici" was selected for the International Photographic Festival Voies-Off, (Arles) in 2007.
